An exploration of the formative ideas, genres, and stylistic practices that shaped the early development of Western musical thought. The course examines how social, philosophical, and artistic contexts influenced musical creation, performance, and notation, and how evolving conceptions of sound and form established the foundations of the Western tradition. Listening, score study, and discussion emphasize connections between music and the cultural imagination of its time.
