Catalog description

Introduction to Medical Coding provides students with a strong foundation in the principles and applications of medical coding across diverse healthcare settings. The course introduces career pathways, professional associations, and the credentialing proce ss, while emphasizing the use of ICD -10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems. Students will develop skills in accurate diagnosis and procedure coding, applying documentation standards, and addressing complex disease conditions and injurie s. The curriculum also explores healthcare reimbursement models, third -party payer systems, and the integral role of coding in revenue cycle management. By the end of the course, students will recognize the importance of precise code assignment in supporting compliance, efficient billing , and accurate healthcare reporting.
