The Inklings:20th Century Mythmakers

Catalog description

This course investigates the role of myth in religion and society, and the mythographies and mythological themes inherent in the writings of the Inklings, a famous literary discussion group that met in Oxford from the late 1930s through the 1940s. Though we will focus on the writings of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, we will consider the role that the whole community of the Inklings played in the individual writing pursuits of its members. Themes that we investigate will include: Mythopoeia; Religion and Hero Mythology; The Arthurian Legend; Myth and Fairy Tales; and Myth and Nature. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the California Lutheran University Oxford Study Abroad Program
