Spoken Word As Transformative Art
California Lutheran University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
TAUGHT BY PSR. Spoken Word poetry is an arttform that developed out of the Black Arts Movement and Hip Hop culture. Beyond being an artistic expression, spoken word is also a transformative ministry rooted in the legacy of Black folk religious traditions where sacred space is created through ritual performance and imaginative theologies. This class explores the phenomenon of the poet as preacher and prophet in the public square. It also engages how spoken word poetry serves as an affirmative medium of religious formation and theological meaning-making that offers a creative means of resisting systems of oppressions. (Lectures, small groups, short papers, and a final video project.)
