Taught by GTU. Imaging Resistance: Art, Religion, and Activism for the 21st Century. How have visual artists and theologians responded to times of cultural instability and unrest? This course surveys how artistic and religious movements in the past four decades have modeled combative strategies for living in times of instability. Each week, we will take a close look at a particular art movement such as outsider, Black, chicanx, feminist, indigenous, queer, and eco-art coupled with readings in theologies of resistance. The objective of this course is twofold: to learn about how art and religion have generated praxes of emancipation; to examine the visual production that emerges from these revolutionary movements so as to assess how art and religion have been catalysts of transformation.
