Contemplative Drawing
California Lutheran University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Taught by GTU/Center for Arts and Religion Drawing as a Contemplative Process. "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." Marcel Proust. From the beginning of human history the act of drawing has been a practice by which the world may be explored, rediscovered, and made new. Practicing contemplative drawing is a meditative art, an act of centering in the self and in the present moment. Students will examine the cross-cultural history of drawing from the prehistoric to the contemporary world while engaging in drawing exercises that allow their eyes, hands, and hearts to be translators between the inner world and the outer world. Through a series of accessible traditional and non-traditional drawing exercises, such as blind contour drawing, pattern drawing, working with rhythm, drawing from nature, and exploring darkness and light, students will deepen their relationship to the interconnection between embodied and transcendent experience.
