Latin American Philosophy

Catalog description

The longstanding philosophical canon of the Western/English-speaking world largely omits the experiences of and works by Latine intellectuals despite ample evidence of the deep, philosophical worldviews of Mexica, Maya, Moche, Inka, Mapuche, and Zapotec peoples. As an emerging field in philosophy, Latin American and Latinx Philosophies are concerned with the moral, social, political, and epistemic significance of Latines and our/their experiences. This course explores these themes and the broad questions: Is there a unique Latinx philosophy? How has Latinx philosophy unfolded around gender and feminism? Why is Latinx philosophy occasionally identified as a philosophy of liberation and decoloniality?
