Taught by JST, On-Line. This readings course integrates historical, literary, and theological perspectives on John's Gospel. Students will read the text of John carefully and repeatedly in conversation with major scholarship on John's Gospel. Major topics include John's Christology, soteriology, and ecclesiology; John's relationship to the Jewish Scriptures, to the other Gospels, and to the Johannine epistles; early Christian reading of John; and theological interpretation of John today. Weekly synchronous discussion is combined with asynchronous reflective and analytical writing. The course will involve substantial reading. Student learning will be assessed on the basis of participation, weekly writing, and a final synthetic written assignment. The course will be offered virtually.
