TAUGHT BY GTU. "Luther and the Jews" combines intellectual and cultural history to examine the attitudes of the reformer in the 16th century Reformation context. Several of Martin Luther's own texts are presented as case studies and are subjected to critical analysis as historical primary sources. Additionally, a wide range of secondary sources on Jewish life in 16th century Europe serve as opportunities to engage in historical narratives and arguments. Students will not only be exposed to scholarship on Christian-Jewish relationships in the Reformation period, but will also sharpen historical skills. The course combines lecture and seminar formats with a culminating research project that engages the historiography of the topic. The course is designed for the M.A./MDiv student. PhD students may enroll with instructor consent and will have modified assessment. This course is taught by GTU PhD student Brandon Peck with a Newhall Award, under the supervision of Kirsi Stjerna.
