Catalog description

This course is an introduction to the scientific study of the English language. The course will cover the core areas of linguistic theories-phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics; and the applied areas of linguistics, including the study of language in society, language change, language acquisition, and practical applications of linguistics for teaching. Students will examine their own linguistic beliefs and attitudes within the diversity of language systems. Prerequisite: ENGL111
