Gender and Science

Catalog description

Examines the social dynamics of gender, science, and technology utilizing sociological, anthropological, and feminist theories, methods, and approaches. Analyzes gender and power relations in the origins, organization, and impact of science and technology. Assesses the role of socially-responsible scientific and technological practices in struggles for social justice. Topics include knowledge production, scientific practice, education, professions, reproductive technology, innovation and design, public policy, and sustainability. Focuses on gender as it intersects with other hierarchical dimensions of human experience including, but not limited to, race, class, cultural background, sexuality, and ability status. SOC 48 and WS 48 are cross-listed courses. Students may enroll in one course for credit, but not more than one. May be offered in a distance-learning format. CAB GE D, Cal-GETC 4.
