Catalog description
This is the first of two courses designed primarily for heritage speakers of Spanish, (near-)native speakers of Spanish with little or no academic preparation in standard Spanish, or those with a strong Spanish-speaking background or years of immersion in a Spanish-speaking environment. Covers standard Spanish, including formal vocabulary, simple and compound tenses, nouns, adjectives, accent marks, and orthography. Also exposes students to authentic Spanish texts (essays, art, etc.) to explore the rich and diverse culture of different Spanish-speaking countries. Topics such as geography, history, personalities, flags, and similar Spanish-speaking civilization traits are also covered. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish. May be offered in a distance-learning format. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC, WITH LIMITS: SPAN 3S and 17 combined with SPAN 3 and 4: maximum credit-1 series.
