Catalog description

A historical survey of American popular music, including but not limited to: jazz, rock, hip-hop, electronic popular music, country, and folk. Students will develop an understanding of the cultural, social, historical, and technological forces shaping the music. Students will learn to apply critical analysis to musical styles, instrumentation, and song structure in addition to issues of race, ethnicity, social class, and gender as formative factors influencing their evolution. Concert attendance may be required. May be offered in a distance-learning format. CAB GE C, Cal-GETC 3A.
