This course is a historical survey of the United States, from Indigenous North America to the end of Reconstruction. The course also introduces students to historical reasoning skills. Traces the development of American ideals and institutions from the precolonial and colonial periods through the American Revolution, the establishment of the Constitution, early national and antebellum eras, and the Civil War, with an emphasis on the historical, philosophical, political, and aesthetic contexts.
