Dance Appreciation

Catalog description

When does moving become dancing? When does a dance party become a community celebration? How does dancing highlight important cultural, historical, or personal moments? Dance Appreciation is designed to help us see how people dance and how dancing shapes the way communities and societies see themselves. This course is an introduction to dance studies and dance history, a survey of a variety of dance forms, styles, and movements, including hip hop, hula, Folklórico de México, ballet, jazz dance, contemporary dance, social dance, and other diasporic traditions. Dance Appreciation introduces vocabularies for describing physical and social movements through viewing and discussing a broad range of dance performances and events. By actively looking at dances, students will deepen their ability to see and describe art and strengthen their analytical skills and ability to articulate their critical perspective.
