Catalog description

This course is grounded in the theoretical foundations and practice of public speaking and small-group communication in a diverse democratic society. Through the study of rhetorical theory, students learn to successfully communicate ideas of an informative and persuasive nature while applying effective small-group theories, concepts, and techniques, such as problem-solving, conflict management, decision-making, and leadership. Students work individually and collaboratively in teams to successfully prepare and present oral presentations delivered in the public speaking mode (one-to-many) that must be faculty-supervised, faculty-evaluated, and delivered to a live audience. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and listening, where students apply rhetorical principles to evaluate the speeches of others and analyze historical and contemporary discourse. May be offered in a distance-learning format. Transfers to CSU; UC, with limits: COMM 2 & 10 combined-maximum credit-1 course. CAB GE A2. C-ID: COMM 140.
