This course provides an overview of theatre from its ancient origins to 1650. Focusing on key theatrical movements, playwrights, and productions, students will critically engage with the artistic innovations that have defined the theater landscape across different periods and regions. The reading of historically representative plays will prompt discussions of such topics as aesthetic developments, various acting approaches, and the evolving demographics of audiences. Students will explore how theatre has served as a reflection of and catalyst for social change throughout history.
