World Religions

Catalog description

In this course, we inquire into, analyze, and contextualize diverse practices and beliefs of world religions. Students analyze artifacts and observations of religion, inquire into how various religions engage similar deep questions, address the rich diversity within a single religious tradition, and encounter religion as a living, evolving process. Students critically locate religions and their development within social, geographical, and institutional contexts. Students develop information literacy and communication skills to research and discuss religious beliefs and practices with field-specific skill and intercultural competency. Religions addressed include, but are not limited to, Hindu religions, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhi, the Baha'i Faith, and select post-colonial integrative or "syncretic" religions (for example, Santeria, Rastafari, Vodou, and/or Cao Dai religion). The course meets the General Education requirement for Community and Cultural Contexts. Prerequisites: Writing Skills II(ENG-095) and Reading Skills II (RDG-095); or Integrated ELL Level 3 (ELL-103) or exemption by placing into higher level courses.
