Catalog description

This course is a survey of the history of music from antiquity through the Classical period (around 1800). While focusing on art music of the Western world, this course aims to relate course topics to music of all time periods, cultures, and styles. Students will develop an understanding of the evolution of music through the centuries, as well as the culture, politics, technology, and human drama that shaped that music. This course is designed for music majors, but is open to any students with experience reading music.
