Section notes
COURSE THEME: Around the World of Human Rights Cinema in 90 Days "Movies touch our hearts, and awaken our vision, and change the way we see things," Hollywood director Martin Scorsese once said. In this thematic section of COM-101/Film as Art, Around the World of Human Rights Cinema in 90 Days, we will embark on a powerful journey through Human Rights Cinema. While viewing both U.S. and global feature-length and short films, we will explore how these films, which represent their specific cultures and societies, tell us stories that inspire us to be agents of change. Discussions, presentations, readings, and writings will focus on how films explore human rights, social status, discrimination, migration, colonialism and race. Field studies, including a semester-long shadowing of a documentarian/storyteller, off-campus film screenings, and guest speakers, will be an important part of this course experience.
