Catalog description

This course offers an introduction to the field of biotechnology. General principles of biology, recombinant DNA technology, and the applications of biotechnology will be presented. The medical, social, political and ethical implications of recombinant DNA technology and the Human Genome Project will be discussed. Work practices and career opportunities in the biotechnology industry will also be outlined. Students will be introduced to industry-specific laboratory skills and basic investigative techniques and procedures used in research through labs designed to reinforce lecture concepts. Class meets: 3 hrs. lecture; 3 hrs. lab. ***This course is designed for students in the A.S. Biological Sciences program. However this course is open to any student interested in exploring careers in biotechnology. This course does not satisfy the General Education "Scientific Reasoning" requirement and may not be appropriate as a lab science elective for Associate in Arts degrees.
