Indigenous Film Studies

Catalog description

This course examines the depictions of Indigenous peoples in North American film and television from the earliest days of motion picture technology through Hollywood westerns to the vibrant contemporary Indigenous media landscape. We will be viewing and critically analyzing films and videos to explore how cinematic representations about Indigenous peoples have informed prevalent ideas about race, gender, and history, as well as their influence on national identity and popular culture. This course is the same as IDS 270 and course repeat rules will apply. Students should consult with their major department regarding any restrictions on their degree requirements.
