Introduction to Human Evolution Lab

This laboratory course provides a hands-on introduction to the scientific study of human evolution through the methods and practices of biological anthropology. Students will actively explore how evolutionary theory explains the emergence and diversification of our species by working directly with data, materials, and comparative specimens. Laboratory activities emphasize the formulation and testing of hypotheses, data collection and analysis, and interpretation of genetic, morphological, behavioral, and fossil evidence. Topics include the mechanisms of evolution, human genetic and phenotypic variation, primate anatomy and behavior, fossil reconstruction, and the material culture record from early primates to Homo sapiens. By engaging in laboratory investigations, students will gain practical experience in observing, measuring, and interpreting evidence that informs our understanding of human origins and evolutionary processes.
