This is a topic course. Topics vary. Prerequisite: Placement, or permission of instructor, or SPAN B120, or another 200-level Spanish course. Current topic description: "Alerta, alerta, alerta que camina, la lucha feminista por la América Latina"-on March 8, 2015, millions of women wearing green scarves took to the streets of Buenos Aires, chanting in unison. The feminist struggle against femicides became a historic strike, leading to a significant social transformation. Historically, Latin American feminism has consistently engaged in the continent's social struggles, demonstrating its inherent intersectional power. According to activist Verónica Gago, feminism is a question-making machine that combines activism and thought. Thus, since colonization, Latin American feminist literature has been an area of defiant aesthetic experimentation, anticipating, acting upon, and transforming street protests. In this course, we will study key experiments by Latin American women writers through short stories and poems, considering how fighting against the social roles imposed by patriarchy is also an imagining that nourishes new futures.
