Spatial Dynamics Foundations
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This beginner-level course introduces students to Spatial Dynamics, which is not a medium, but rather an approach to engaging with sculpture in the expanded field. Students will build visual, technical, and critical thinking skills through an exploration of materials in space, with particular interest to the relationship between objects, environments, and people. The course begins with a studio-based inquiry into constructing objects through traditional and non-traditional additive, subtractive, and transformative methods. The inquiry will continue beyond studio production and into alternative and public spaces, with an introduction to installation art, social practice, performance art, and dematerialized practices. The focus of the course is on interdisciplinary experimentation of complex ideas through problem solving, laying the groundwork for advanced courses in the arts.
