Dance Composition
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course focuses on embodied choreographic research and development of creative processes for dancemaking. Movement is the material of this course. Through detailed compositional progressions, students will be introduced to practices that foster development of choreographic voice, expressive depth, and ongoing discovery through process. Students will be expected to deepen understanding through broad choreographic experimentation, to examine habits and biases, and to privilege movement invention and innovation. The course will focus primarily on creation in solo but time will also be spent composing for duet and ensemble. Building skill in observation, critical analysis, self-evaluation, and reflection on creative research will be central to this work, and course participants will be supported in creating choreographic work for inclusion in the Fall Dance concert. Enrollment is limited to 15 students. S/NC.
