Russian Romanticism

Catalog description

This course will examine the works of Zhukovsky, Batiushkov, Pushkin, Lermontov, Tiutchev, Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, Odoevsky, and Gogol in the context of Romanticist literary culture. Students will also read works by other European authors associated with Romanticism to elucidate the extent of the adherence of Russian writers to Romanticist aesthetics and philosophy. Advanced reading knowledge of Russian is required for this course.
