Secularism and Secularity

A graduate seminar on secularity, and related concepts, as they have been formulated to describe and interpret political and social life. What difference does “the secular” name? How do theories of the secular implicate our understandings of history, subjectivity, agency, and reason? Reading historical and recent scholarship on the secular, and paying particular attention to themes of coloniality and empire, we critically reflect on a concept that has been central to the formation of modern religion and politics.
