Catalog description

Study of developments in Japanese religion, thought, and culture from the late Edo through the Meiji periods (ca. 1800-1912), and associated scholarly debates. We will read and discuss primary texts in English translation, modern secondary interpretations, and selected works in Sino-Japanese and/or Japanese, depending on the language capacities of enrolled students. Qualified undergraduates may enroll with permission of the instructor.
