Black Religion and Media in America

The religious lives of Black people have been represented across media forms for centuries. This course surveys the history and practice of this phenomenon, and what it reveals about race, belief, and culture in the United States. Paying special attention to print, film, radio, television, and social media, this class examines how Black religious actors use media to articulate the boundaries of blackness and religiosity; how religion and media have been integral to Black people’s calls for equity and inclusion in American society; and how popular images of Black faith continue to inform cultural discourse on race, religion, gender, class, sexuality, and citizenship.
