Catalog description

This first-year seminar studies the phenomenon and representation of religious violence, with a focus on the critical study of contemporary media. and the nature and roots of militant Islamist violence in the contemporary world. We will learn about historical contexts, theoretical structures, and comparative case studies and explore self-styled religious movements, including the rhetoric of martyrdom, domestic (US) and international terrorism, and social media.
