Starting with Pierre Nora’s concept of Lieux de Memoire – places where the exhausted capital of collective memory condenses and is expressed – this course explores from two perspectives, the history of Portuguese Estado Novo. It embarks upon a chronological study of the period following the economic, political, and social transformations that had affected Portugal. ScrutinizeS how the Estado Novo created, used and re-adapted some Portuguese Lieux de Memoire in order to legitimize itself; shape the way Portuguese understand their country; generate a favorable image in Portugal and abroad.
