Latin American and Latinx philosophers are often excluded from the standard “Western philosophical canon”, and on the rare occasion that they are included, their position is normally relegated to work on sociopolitical and value theoretic themes. The purpose of this course is not to minimize Latin American and Latinx work in that area, but to emphasize and celebrate the work done by Latin American and Latinx philosophers in the “core analytic” themes of metaphysics, logic, language, and epistemology. The course can moreover be interpreted as offering an alternative philosophical canon which will introduce students to the aforementioned core analytic themes in philosophy using entirely Latin American and Latinx sources. Due to this dual purpose, the course is well-positioned to be effective and engaging both to philosophical novices and experts.
