Catalog description
This course introduces fundamental themes in the investigation, evaluation, and theorization of revitalization movements with particular focus on those groups where language represents a fundamental category for group and collective action. This course operates under the assumption that language shift occurs in particular social-political contexts and students will consider relations between individual and community, people and polity, methods and commitments, as well as forms of violence and alienation in daily practice. Case studies will engage community projects, sociolinguistic behaviors, and other symbolic practices.
