Linguistics of an Indigenous Language

Catalog description

This course surveys the grammar of maqlaqsyals ‘the language of the People’ that was one of the major spoken languages in northeast California, southern Oregon, and the northern Great Basin. This language continues to be used by at least two tribal governments and their dispersed maqlaqs (Klamath-Modoc) communities throughout the United States. Students will learn about the history of the language and then learn to use maqlaqsyals and describe its structures.
