Indigenous Human Rights

Catalog description

This course focuses upon Indigenous human rights and will investigate the frameworks established by Indigenous nations and Indigenous peoples, countries (nation-states), and the United Nations through which Indigenous peoples may advocate. Students will learn about individual and collective human rights, Indigenous intellectual property rights, and formulating statements/interventions centered around the sovereignty of Native nations and issues facing Indigenous communities. Throughout the course, students will hear from speakers who have advocated around the world for the human rights of Indigenous peoples. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the structure of the United Nations, the UN process of advocacy, and how to research and create documentation at the UN. This course will invite local tribal communities in for intergenerational learning opportunities and community-based learning.
