Dawnland Explorations: A Community-Engaged Survey of Native New England

Building reciprocal social relationships is essential for many Indigenous cultures and is often a prerequisite for taking part in community-engaged scholarship. In this experiential learning course, students will learn about the cultures and traditions of Dawnland peoples by travelling to culturally significant locations to connect with and learn from local Native communities. Through these excursions and conversations, students will begin to cultivate relationships that will enable them to design and implement mutually beneficial projects that deepen the understanding of the cultural traditions, histories, political experiences, and contemporary knowledge of Native American and Indigenous peoples and enhance student understanding and learning. Students in this class will utilize their skills and resources to partner with a Native collaborator on a jointly defined, service-based project.
