The World “After Gaza”

Many observers, horrified by the ongoing carnage in Gaza, interpreted “the world’s response” to Israel’s war against Hamas after the attack of October 7, 2023, as a symptom for an end of an era in international relations. Taking these observations seriously and critically, this seminar asks what this international order was – or was imagined to be – and why the war in Gaza is seen to epitomize this order’s dismantling. While making Gaza the perspective from which this international order, and its image, will be studied, the seminar will focus on three key concepts: Holocaust, Genocide, and Settler Colonialism. We will examine how each concept is used to make sense of the violence in Gaza, to conceive the international order whose end Gaza marks, and to recognize the dismantling of this order, or its image.
