This special topics workshop/seminar explores our capacity as poets, writers, and multi-disciplinary artists to dialogue with the world around us through a socially engaged practice. During this course we will study utopian and dystopian literature, world-making poetry, theoretical frameworks, and a variety of social philosophies and creative practices that, in the words of Carol Becker, create micro-utopias: artistic interventions that “attempt to create physical manifestations of an ideal ‘humanity’ in an inhumane world.” We will workshop and activate our creative ideas in a laboratory-like atmosphere. All art-makers are welcome. Be prepared to move, discuss, risk, play, theorize, and revise.
