Reading and Making with Large Language Models

Large Language Models can be used to generate text with a facility that some of us hail as ‘human-level.’ Informed by theory – chiefly linguistic and language philosophical – this workshop seminar allows its participants to explore what we mean when we say that artificial intelligence reads and writes; and what is implied for our own processes of literary or language-art making when we agree or intend to read and write with (and/or against) such systems. Apart from its reading-informed discussion, the workshop will provide time and critique for its participants’ projects, which will engage and experiment with the seminar-generated ideas and actual machine-learned techniques.
