Reimaging Resistance: Debates in Contemporary Art from Latin America

Catalog description

This course introduces students to problems and questions addressed in contemporary Latin American art. We will discuss a wide range of productions that include theoretical texts, exhibitions, manifestos, videos, installations, paintings, and performances. We will explore how art rethinks social constructs of gender, race, national imaginaries, or the relationship with the non-human world. The languages of instruction will be Spanish and English. Intermediate knowledge of Spanish is required for conducting readings and class discussions. This course is appropriate for students who have taken AP Spanish, heritage speakers, and students who have taken or placed in 500-level Spanish language classes at Brown.
