Representations of Italian Fascism

This seminar is a Global Experiential Travel and Learning (GELT) course. There are no prerequisites. The first two weeks will be taught online, for now planned to meet between 12-2PM (EST). Two central questions drive this course. First: how did Italian fascism represent itself? And after its defeat: how was fascism represented by its critics and its supporters? Second: did Italian fascism produce consent, in the sense that it produced a culture? On the latter, many critics believe that fascism was an event produced from above, an imposition, and therefore without traces of a culture. This course will take on these questions, both in class and on the ground. At home we will delve into these problems analytically. In Rome, for a week, we will explore on the ground how Italian fascism imprinted itself in the past and the present.
