Catalog description

According to Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italian neorealism “represented the first act of critical consciousness, politically and ideologically, that Italy had of itself.” This course aims to show some of the classic neorealist films made in Italy in the 1940s: from Luchino Visconti’s Ossessione to Roberto Rossellini’s Germania anno zero and Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D., neorealist cinema captures Italy’s new gaze onto itself, onto its hardships and its hopes. This course will be taught in Italian.
