This course aims to explore “family scenes” in Italian cinema. On the one hand, it will seek to illustrate the various representations that cinema offers of family groups and the kinship ties that constitute them. On the other hand, the expression “family scenes” can be understood in a different sense, that is, as the “scenata” or scene that the family makes and that cinema brings to the screen. From Luchino Visconti to Emma Dante, from Marco Bellocchio to Alina Marazzi, the course will focus on films that stage the family and its crisis, critically questioning the complex centrality of the female role, which is exposed at the heart of the family anomaly.
