Introduction to Spatial Digital Humanities

The spatial humanities merges geographical information systems (GIS), geospatial analysis, and quantitative data with critical questions in the humanities and areas of study such as literature, history, art, and culture. It asks the “why” in the “where” in digital humanities (DH). This course introduces students to the digital and virtual worlds of maps, data, algorithms, VR/AR/XR, and critical DH scholarships. Together, we approach the spatial humanities from a variety of angles, including race, gender, de/anti/postcolonialism, and other subfields in DH. Students will experiment with prominent digital tools (Omeka Neatline, Leaflet, ArcGIS, StoryMaps, etc.) to develop their digital skillsets and learn to create maps and spatial artifacts of their own.
