Catalog description

This graduate seminar will examine the history and historiography of antisemitism in three geopolitical and discursive chapters. We will begin with the anti-Judaism that developed in the early Christian era in the Middle East and Mediterranean and continued in European and Islamic contexts. We will continue with the largely European, 19th-century evolution of modern antisemitism and its scientific and racializing claims. Finally, we will look at the contemporary political and ideological uses of antisemitism accusations, including its imbrications within the Israel/Palestine conflict.
