South Africa entered a new era when Nelson Mandela walked out of prison in 1989. Apartheid, the world’s most extreme form of racial segregation ended and the country became a liberal democracy. The exhilaration and disillusionment since then are enormous. With an emphasis on the experiences of ordinary people, especially the most vulnerable Black South Africans, this seminar considers transformation and its limits. We move across disciplines to explore economic precarity, racial and cultural politics, youth activism, public health, and more. Students will participate in weekly discussions, collaborate in creating a public-facing digital resource, and produce a final project.
