Understanding the Palestinians: 1948-present

Palestinians are largely absent in histories of the “Arab-Israeli Conflict.” This course draws on new scholarship that centers Palestinian experiences from the Nakba (catastrophe) of 1948 to the present. We explore the social and cultural histories of all Palestinians –in Israel, in the Occupied Territories, and in the diaspora—and their struggles for equality, self-determination, and the right of return. Ultimately, we ask: what is the Palestinian condition? And why has it become a global signifier for imagining a just and shared world?
