Indigenous Canada

Catalog description

This course, focusing primarily (but not exclusively) on Canada, will examine colonization thematically. These themes will include: colonization of the land, colonization of the soul, colonization of education, colonization of the body, and colonization of identity. You will learn about Indigenous societies in what became Canada through a broad historical span from pre-contact to the early twenty-first century by investigating a variety of sources including archaeological, artistic, and experiential evidence as well as documents, landscapes, and oral histories. This course centers sources on Indigenous perspectives to challenge conventional histories of colonialism, focusing on resistance, continuity, and agency.
