Catalog description

From Melaka to Manila, and from sultanates to megacities, this new course introduces students to the plural past of Southeast Asia. In doing so, it analyzes how the region came to be (as a field of study in the mid-twentieth century), while surveying, too, the ways in which histories of polity, port, empire, and revolution have shaped not only the world in Southeast Asia—but also Southeast Asia in the world.
